Sigma can be defined as the standard deviation of a set of continuous data. In the context of a normal distribution, it would be the width of a normal distribution consisting of the mean plus and minus three standard deviations, which would encompass 99.73% of the data. DMAIC is a data-driven approach used for optimizing and improving the existing business designs and processes. The five phases of DMAIC are listed below, and each phase involves tools and tasks to help find the final solution. The term “Six Sigma” is derived from the bell curve in statistics, in which sigma represents the standard deviation from the center.

The term Six Sigma originated in manufacturing as a means of quality control. Six Sigma quality is achieved when long-term defect levels are below 3.4 defects per million opportunities (DPMO). Sigma makes reference to the standard deviation of a set of data, which is a statistical term. If your data is normally distributed, and you add and subtract the value of 3 standard deviations from your average, that 3+3 (or six) standard deviations will encompass 99.73% of your data. Therefore, all organizations can utilize Six Sigma to improve everything that they do. The BB formed a team and went to work to identify the sources of variation and eliminate them.

Large amounts of data were collected on a daily and weekly basis from various servers. The deployment of Six Sigma can range from a simple problem-solving approach to an organization-wide transformation.

Sigma programs are overseen by a Six Sigma Master Black Belt, per the terms created by Motorola. This was the accepted norm for many years until Bill Smith proposed gathering and analyzing data at a more granular level and making six sigma the point at which a process has to be corrected. You can apply all of those to your organization regardless of what type of business you’re in.
